VeriSign Selling NSI
Date: Thursday October 16 2003, @06:45AM
Topic: Verisign/NSI

VeriSign to Sell Network Solutions Business to Pivotal Private Equity. They are getting $100 million for 85% of NSI, which is somewhat less than the multi-billion valuation placed on NSI when VeriSign acquired it. The Phoenix-based buyer seems to have been doing some shopping recently.

Update: Via the Trademark Blog, here's the Pivotal's self-description

[Now, does that mean I have to change the name of this topic category?]

Verisign is still with us

Well, since Verisign is only selling the registrar business, while keeping the registry, I guess we just need to scratch the last four characters from the topic title. We can keep the rest of 'em.

Change the logo, too

I'd change the logo, too and rename the topic category "VeriSign". You could have a graphics artist design a new parody of the VeriSign logo. Perhaps the red and black VeriSign text with the check mark transformed into a question mark?

Cheers,
Doug

Network Solutions doesn't have 29 million customers. It has about 7 million domain names (down from 9 million two years ago) at last count. Many customers have multiple names, too. Still, I doubt 4 million customers are highly satisified. *lol*

Cheers,
Doug

the price is shockingly low, i bet that NSI on its own probably has $10-20,000,000 in prepaid domain name fees received alone for future years registrations.

The low number tells me that NSI was never adept at leveraging its one time monopoly into selling registrar and hosting solutions and other products in a "competitive" marketplace....assuming at one time they had the lions share of 28,000,000 customers, 100 Mil is quite a drop in value given what other smaller registrars have fetched.

now the important part, since they couldnt compete in an open marketpalce, it seems they are only willing to be in bsuinesses supported by their registry monopoly like sitefinder and WLS.
