Dyson Predicts Many New gTLDs (just kidding)

Topic: Laugh (or Cry)

Esther Dyson pens some (somewhat) humorous tech predictions for 2003 in the European Wall Street Journal (not online without subscription), including one about ICANN creating lots of new gTLDs in which our own Milton Mueller comes in for mild ribbing:

Here's the excerpt about ICANN:

A new batch of Internet names is coming. The Internet Corp.ion for Assigned Names and Numbers -- the international body that oversees .net, .biz and other domain names -- announced its latest entrants. They include .ski (to be administered by a spin-off group from .fun), .san (for health-care workers and companies), .safe (for insurance companies), .sorry (for confessional sites, the new rage) and .sandy (for fans of the singer).

"Why do they all begin with 's'?" complained longtime ICANN critic Milton Mueller. In addition, the appointment of Register.com to run the operations of four of the five new domains is controversial; it already won six of last year's eight new domains, including the wildly popular .tina. Register.com also manages .pro, .blog .nano and .mp3.

it's always nice to see that dyson retains her sense of levity when it comes to the organization she (a) oversaw during its first steps toward disposing of open public input, and (b) can't seem to leave. maybe she can dispense some of her spritely good humor next time doing so would undermine whatever agenda authoritarians like kraaijenbrink or kooks like cohen are pushing, hm?

cheers,
t
