Domain Registry Sues Tucows
Date: Tuesday July 23 2002, @03:42PM
Topic: Lawsuits and Judicial Decisions

Anonymous writes "According to this complaint posted on Tucows site, Domain Registry of Canada has sued Tucows alleging defamation in order to perserve its verisign style predatory marketing campaign."

Domainregistry sends domain holders "renewal letters" beguiling registrants into transfering to them at significantly higher prices. They allege that a warning posted on tucows site is defamatory and are seeking an injuction against it.

Um, hello, earth to ICANNWatch editors, I only flagged this story ten days ago, and if I was a total jerk I wouldn't even give you a link on your own site. If you can't police it better than that, well, that's who we call lamers on this internet thing. As for domain registry of * and Ver$ign, a pox on both your houses and you can both kiss my sorry ass as it vanishes over the horizon. See you when I testify against you *, someone has to get these scumbags outta here, and the lawyers seem to be doing a bang up job so far. Feh! -g

This link to the Yahoo story isn't presently working, but when it did it reported that intercosmos/directnic is the latest registrar to go after VeriSign for their confusing mailout that caused some other registrars' registrants to renew with VeriSign. Even if treble damages are awarded, if another registrar charges $10 per domain name and VeriSign charges $35 they might still come out ahead. -g
