Senate SubCommittee to Hold ICANN Hearing
Date: Wednesday June 05 2002, @10:02AM
Topic: USA Goverment Relations

It's pretty official: the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Science and Technology will hold a hearing about ICANN on June 12 at 2:30. It's a little unclear who the witnesses will be, but the rumors seem to be congealing around Stuart Lynn (ICANN), Nancy Victory (Dept. of Commerce), and representatives from VeriSign, CDT, plus probably others. I also hear that dissident ICANN Board Member Karl Auerbach will be invited, but don't know if he will be able to attend. Some rumors suggest that ICANN and DoC will be on a separate panel from any critics, which both means they'll have an easier time of it and that ... the critics get the last word.

Committees usually accept written submissions from people not invited, so if you can write a calm, reasonable, persuasive, missive, this is a good time to do so. On the other hand, Senators are very busy folk, and typically attendence at subcommittee meetings is low -- sometimes just the Chair.

But likewise, if we don't make the effort to participate in politics, we can't complain when things don't turn out the way we want. One of my Senator's is on the subcommittee and I will be sending him a brief note of my thoughts.

ICANN deserve to be rebuked and made to pay compensation to all on the receiving end of illegal and unfair UDRP decisions with the Arbitration Forums; if they don't get the Reform Process right, then they must be give NOTICE that their 'Contract' is thereby cancelled forthwith.

Yes, ICANN, do need luck, but I am not wishing it upon them - they do not deserve it due to their corporate licking of trademark-holders and big business corporate giants...

FACE IT ICANN, YOU DO NOT STAND FOR EITHER CONSUMERS OR THE INTERNET COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE...

CHANGE, OR DIE INTO OBSCURITY AND HISTORY.
