Berkman Center will not webcast ICANN's Accra meetings

Topic: ICANN Meetings

fnord writes "Ben Edelman has announced that the Berkman Center will not be involved in webcasting ICANN's upcoming meetings in Accra, Ghana. He gives some additional information in a follow-up. It appears someone will take on the chore as ICANN's redesigned sign-up page includes the option of participating remotely."

It is conceivable remote participation could be limited to watching Live Streaming of the proceedings. That is, perhaps no IRC and/or no remote questions. One hopes not. The sign-up page now also requires (with no explanation why) that even remote participants submit their street addresses and phone numbers. Surely the ICANN eminences gris would recall the meaning of GIGO.

Berkman has done a commendable job over the past number of meetings (archives here). This also leaves open the question of if/where/how future archives might be available. Time will tell if this is a seamless (and largely meaningless) transition or a further erosion of transparency. -g

I was willing to give ICANN the benefit of the doubt, but the seams are already showing. The DNSO is now expected to fund its own webcasting, see Note 2. NC Chair Philip Sheppard has now asked for sponsors for the DNSO webcast.

Nothing like leaving it to the last minute here, there's a full 10 days to put it all together, otherwise it may be down to an audio archive. Step right up. $1250/day and your name in lights, unless your name is Perhaps Disney already has a lock on it, being able to claim IP rights on such a goofy, mickey mouse operation. -g

ICANN has updated its page regarding the Accra meeting, stating:
ICANN is planning to webcast the DNSO General Assembly and Names Council Meetings, the ICANN Public Forum, and the ICANN Board meeting. Check back for details of the webcasts and remote participation opportunities for those unable to attend the meetings in person.
This is good news if ACCuRAte :) . I'll continue to check back and report changes here. -g
