MDR 2.001K review: two thumbs down

Topic: ICANN Meetings

Telepolis has just published my longish "review," heavy on background, of ICANN's recent Marina Del Rey meetings. Not surprisingly, it's not very positive.

ExecSumm: (1) hijacking the agenda was very possibly a CYA tactic, but (2) certainly an effort to stave off At Large issues; (3) the ALSC was so contrained that it's report could only end up being a deeply compromised compromise; (4) a rundown of the meeting's main points (ccTLD issues excluded).

Thanks t, as usual, for the best ICANN meeting analysis.

Regarding giving up the new TLD app funding source, seems to me that ICANN still has:
=37 apps left to go through, less some unknown number who have washed their hands of the process. The TLDs in waiting won't take kindly to paying $50k or whatever again, or to new applicants at some future date paying such to leap over them. I don't think the new TLD hustle is something they can do again for quite some time. -g
