Verisign Unchained

Topic: Verisign/NSI

Anonymous writes "Flexing his muscles for a reporter for, Verisign CEO Stratton Sclavos recently crowed "We can take down the network." Yes, he means this network -- the Internet."

That Sclavos could take such giddy pride in his ability to bring critical, worldwide network infrastructure to its knees is particularly offensive at a time when securing critical infrastructure is receiving attention at the highest levels of our government.

Measuring one's power by the ability to destroy is hardly novel, especially in these times, but it's not what you'd expect from the leader of a U.S.-based company that usually trumpets it "trust" and "security" systems. Fortunately, Verisign's puerile braggadocio comes just in time for ICANN's next meeting on the "Security and Stability of the Internet Naming and Address Allocation Systems."

Memo to the program committee: your biggest threat to security and stability is the operator of your three largest TLDs. Increased competition isn't the only reason to expand the name space. You'll need some stable, and sane, registry operators when you need to replace Verisign.

I would like to hope that the network will be teared down soon. In such case, every net firm can start again with another system that exclude and verisign.

The government should be sued to have made such a monster.

God Bless America!
