Nice trivia, fnord. Although the Frampton in the case you mention was really named Lyle not Peter, and his site did appear to be trying to sell music-related merchandise under the name "Peter Frampton." Case closed, this guy was a squatter.

Lyle's middle name is Peter, you can read more about his side of the story on the yet to be transferred peterframpton.com, and here is a news article. And here is yet another famous Peter Frampton, perhaps he should have filed with WIPO first. Archive.org has a number of archived peterframpton.com front pages. OK, so the guy linked to a guitar shop, he also linked to numerous other non-music related affiliates. I don't think this would meet the level of passing off in the real world. Keeping with the musical theme you may want to check the recent WIPO gloria.com (G-L-O-R-I-A) decision which went to the Respondent in a split decision. This seems to be a growing trend amongst some squatters, find someone or something that fits the name and transfer it to them, or claim to. EGs: worldnetatt is variously claimed to mean WORLDwide NETwork of ATTorneys and The WORLD of NETtie ATTebury (note that neither Amazon nor Google can find any such books). The actions (or inaction) of registrar eNom are interesting in this regard. ICANN won't bring its accredited registrars to heel for fleecing and misleading hundreds, probably thousands, of registrants, but watch how long it takes them to protect an Intellectual Property interest. And finally Don Henley, not the famous musician, still has don-henley.com despite legal threats, and the famous musician, who otherwise claims to not like lawyers much and actively opposes things like the RIAA, now has donhenley.com, so all's right with the world. -g
