Correction Dan, the "Speculator Brigade" loves ICANN. Only ICANN's TLDs are proving profitable to speculators, even with the downturn in the domain economy. Only alternatives such as New.net, IOD's .WEB, and the likes of Name-Space have all proved to be a waste of money for speculators.
On the other hand, .info, .biz, and probably .us will be good for speculators.
The speculation buck is best invested in ICANN TLDs. Speculators can only make money with TLDs where IP interest is high, where trademark holders feel it is necessary to grab their marks, giving commercial credibility to the TLD.
The alternatives like New.net are not scams, but designed to attract the wild speculator's dollar. Speculators take a few lumps, then learn quickly.
