Please Remember
All though there may be 40 or so wanna be TLD (ICANN) Administrators , most of the TLDs have been in existance outside the ICANN Legacy root, upon which the .EU has not been duplicated to my knowledge
There is only one root network that I am aware of that Provide full access to the ENTIRE Internet (I.e. - domain that exist both on the USG root and in other roots) the name of the root is: The PACIFICRoot Network!

The difference is: EU is in the ISO3166 country code standard, sort of (reserved). This is just another ccTLD.
And the EU is more and more become a regular country. It has its own currency, judicial system, parliament, police, borders, etc. It's a gradual process.
The need for this domain is huge. There are plenty of domains on the form companynameeurope.com
.eu will also be key to add to the national identy of Europe. It'll almost be as important as common european money to have a common european domain. .int just doesn't cut it for European institutions anymore.
