La plus ca change was my first thought, too, but things have changed—a lot. Kudos to Singel for his savvy reporting, but I wish he'd knocked it out of the park, as it were (sports metaphors, bleh). "[B]asic web programming techniques" may be adequate for a generic hosting environment, but this context is really complex: it involves a critical choke point where the drive to "monetize"—which I think we'll be seeing much more of as the economy continues to slide—is placed in very direct conflict with security needs. As the internet matures (and remember, please, we're only in its infant phase), the impact of these kinds of hacks could be really disastrous. Issues like this are just an early tremor, and there will come a time when someone pulls of a spectacular hack with far-reaching consequences. We haven't yet developed the pervasive institutional experience we need, in which management recognizes the vistas of liability that these little experiments will open up. I don't mean to sound like one of those "9/11!!! electronic Pearl Harbor!!!" clowns who obsess over "national security"; the prospect this opens up is much more akin to things like data leaks (which already affect millions) than apocalyptic fantasies—and, I think, are that much more alarming as a result.
