"It also allows the receivers of content to have a better understand of what sort of content to expect. .TRAVEL, .JOB, .MUSEUM, .AERO -- whatever their relative merits -- perform a similar function. You may not choose to use it, but those who do see the value."
I cannot choose to use .museum, .aero, and .travel. Those are "restricted" to specificly-accredited entities.

.xxx will cause ICANN serious problems because it will by definition set two arbitrary limits. The first is for content deemed not titillating enough and second for that which is deemed two obscene even for .xxx
Every person has their own personal view of where those two boundaries should be drawn. The more vociferous often feel that everybody else should be forced to share “their” personal view of where these boundaries should be drawn.
The position of these two boundaries varies enormously between people of the same society, so how can one possibly attempt draw these boundaries for differing societies, say Iran, Sweden, Holland and the US?
You also illustrate one other very telling point.
“You may not choose to use it, but those who do see the value.” - Exactly that is why companies and famous people who cannot afford the services of companies like your own will have to “voluntarily” register TheirOwnName.xxx for $80 a year.
