New.NET FON.com Router Endorsed by ICANN Board

This is a fine story. It's a harbinger: Google and Skype have invested in a Martin Varsavsky startup called FON. (Note that Varsavsky floated the idea in a blog.) (Note that OneWebDay could use sponsors.)
All you need to do to become a Fonero is download some software that turns your wireless router into a local hotspot. Then anyone around you can flip open their laptop and become part of the network. Listen to Skype founder Janus Friis:
“There is no more important shared goal that we have as an industry than helping to make broadband Internet access widespread and low cost. So as part of Skype’s role in making this happen ... today we are announcing that we are making a small investment in a new and exciting company called FON.”
It would be great to have wireless internet access available everywhere. It would be a dream come true.

i'm a middling-generation Internet type person, getting involved when i was the Controller and Administrative CIO for the University of Minnesota (http://www.umn.edu) in the late '80's. my next stop after being introduced to the Internet was to found a high-speed ISP (ISDN and faster) in the mid-90's. my other interest was generic domain names, which reminded me of call-letters from the community stations i founded in the early 70's (WORT-FMin (http://www.wort-fm.org/) Madison was the one that i did all on my own, but i helped with KUSPin (http://www.kusp.org/) Santa Cruz, KDNA in St Louis, KFAI in (http://www.kfai.org/) Minneapolis, WEFT (http://www.weft.org/) in Chambana and was a co-founder of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (http://www.nfcb.org/index.jsp)).
so i'm a long-time community type guy and when domain names came to my attention, i got a gaggle of them that i thought would be good to build online communities around -- haven.com, bar.com, pub.com, grill.com and place.com. as you can tell by visiting those sites, i never did much with them...
but i also registered company.com and corp.com, thinking they might be handy one day. i sold company.com in the last 3 months of the bubble for a boatload of cash and that leaves corp.com...
the corp.com registry is located at www.registry.corp.com and you can follow the progress of that project on the blog that i maintain there.
