You are right that the UN would make more of a mess out of the internet. The US government overseeing it might not be perfect but at least they allow things to run without too much beuracracy. Look at the European Union and how they have been trying to get .eu going since about 1998 and still no sign of it! And .eu would benefit European companies as an alternative to the American saturated .com. The UN and EU are both useless. Also, the Americans did give us the internet and I believe because o this do have a bit more rights to oversee it than any one else (at least over the short term).
