gridlock? How come there are nearly 30,000,000 more .com's than other TLDs? Even giving away .info's doesn’t make people choose .info over .com.
Over 2004 the usage of .ws, .cc & .nu has declined while the predominant growth of the www has occurred in ccTLDs with successful economies.
So leaving aside the confusion argument who exactly benefits from lots of new TLDs…..?
Companies don't benefit, they just incur more costs or suffer brand dilution.
End users don’t benefit, even after 3 years the most successful of the new TLDs .info is virtually unknown to end users and on the whole .info’s have zero type ins.
Small independent developers…- nope most of them are struck on .com
Speculators - err no because their existing “collections” will be devalued.
That leaves….
The companies who own the rights to operate the new TLDs , though if Afilias keeps giving .info’s away margins are going to be pretty tight for any new start up registries.
And a few lawyers specializing in WIPO / Trademark infringement.
