Agreed, but definitely, it's a funny joke.
In a related matter that is not a joke, Dow Jones & Company decided to remove three long-standing companies from the world's best known barometer of the U.S. stock market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average. AT&T, Eastman Kodak, and International Paper were removed -- and replaced by AIG, Pfizer, and Verizon Communications.
I must be missing something, did AT&T used to manage the InterNIC Web site? What did its job entail and for how long did it manage it?
Cheers, Doug Doug Mehus

The original InterNIC contract consisted of three distinct parts: Information Services, Directory and Database Services, and Registration Services. General Atomics provided INFORMATION services, AT&T provided directory and Database services, and Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI) provided domain name Registration services.
The Directory and Database service was supposed to help locate organization and people on Internet. (Hmmm, sounds like Whois?) It included Directory of Directories, containing lists of FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sites, and other lists.
Somehow, NSI managed to get rich off the InterNIC contract, while AT&T did not, and even I am not sure whatever became of General Atomics.
