I agree we don't get joy from VeriSign. Rather the contrary. We get joy from having lots of competitors to VeriSign, each enjoying the freedom to experiment, and even to fail, without having to go to ICANN for permission. ICANN has prevented that to date. Whether this is incompetence or conspiracy almost doesn't matter.
If ICANN wins the VeriSign case, it really will cement its position as the strangler of innovation in DNS-space and as gatekeeper of the highly artificial scarcity.
I agree that to date the stuff being deployed is mostly ugly, but that's because the only people who can survive the ICANN process as the brontosaurs and the tyrannasaurs. The small agile mammals have been stifled in embryo, or had the brains to run away and find new habitats.

With Verisign having no authority over the root, or any power over new domains or new services, it is considerably less worrisome than ICANN which has the power (delegated from DoC of course) to stiffle same.
Innovation is seldom tidy. And often doesn't succeed, but I have to agree with michael, even if VeriSign does stuff some folks don't like, that's a small price to pay relative to the current governance by gridlock that ICANN is trying to impose.
