When I was on the board the budget for Jones Day was approaching a million dollars per year. As I noted in my final report to the board, I considered much of the work product to be of not acceptable quality (for example, just take a look at the the documents that ICANN/Jones Day submitted in opposition to my case to examine ICANN's financial records.)
Take a look at the recommendations I made regarding Jones Day and ICANN in my final report, which is copied into (and found near the end of): http://www.cavebear.com/rw/senate-july-31-2003.htm [cavebear.com]
And finally, I wonder how much of the fees that ICANN is paying still find their way into the pockets of the Jones Day partner who happened to be the person who formed ICANN, who was its first general counsel, and who continued to be its outside counsel until March of 2003.

There are a lot of good law firms out there. Isn't there an onus on the Board to tender out some of the work, and not put all its eggs in one basket, to become overly dependant on one law firm? Someone else might be able to do equally good work for half the rates, too, savings that can then be passed on to domain registrars/registries (through lower fees) and ultimately passed on to consumers.
