.com should not be likened to a burger joint, and I think that is where your thinking has has gone wrong. burgerking.com, KFC.com, and mcdonalds.com are. Can you remember that? They compete against each other at this time, no problem. No one is stopping you from competing. Amblerburger.com is probably free. .EDU does not compete against .COM or .MIL, GOV etc. That way people can keep track of the competitors in the 2lds. You want to compete against the existing 2lds, not on an even playing field, but by flooding the root. There are sound reasons for the original design.
