You say - "simply build a fire under ICANN to create, say one TLD per day" - this will not happen Karl.
Big Business trademark lobby do not want more TLDs - guess why.
Answer has to do with Corporate takeover of DNS. Sunrise period and UDRP - both aiding and abetting abuses of Trademark and Competition Law.
Corrupt UN WIPO, US DoC and ICANN would identify trademark domains if they truly and honestly wanted to prevent consumer confususion - for example say with .reg TLD ;-)
