They didn't screw customers, customers didn't have patience. Patience is the virtue. If you check their whois, you'll notice many customers with patience.
If you mean "speculators" by saying customers, most of them don't have patience. They all want everything being served to them in one package overnight. That way, they can sell their domains the other day.
New.net managed to survive till today with all the odds against them. They could have done the same thing like .Web by not doing anything but just waiting for being awarded. Everyone can do that. New.net picked the hardest and the most costly route. They're true innovators and innovation should be awarded.
Don't be a follower. :)

The difference, I think, is that I fully expect to see our .Web in the roots, and that waiting and participation will pay off.
At that time, New.net will still be trying to get customers to download their plug-in.
I like our plan of being patient and working within the system better. But perhaps that's just me.
