Actually I can see many reasons why Register.com is worth more than Network Solutions. The number of disgruntled former customers. Network Solutions has a lot of baggage. Lets start with the sex.com case. The liabilities there could be in the $40,000,000 plus range. There was another lawsuit recently for $3,000,000 that followed the sex.com case, and there could be many more disgruntled former customers which may now see litigation against Network Solutions as an attrative option. Register.com simply does not have these problems.
Another thing to keep in mind is that when Verisign purchased Network Solutions it included the registry for .com and .net, and other companies such as Great Domains etc, they have kept the "good stuff" namely the registry and sold off whant may turn out to be a legal nightmare. So comparing the purchase and sale price here does not tell the whole story.
