With all due respect, I disagree with you Doug. New.net is the definition of being innovator.
It's true that they created an alternate root from scratch which "really works". I don't know any other company took an unprecedented risk as New.net did. I only applaud such a risk taking and daring move which only "real" innovators can take.
I don't know too much about idealab's current financial situation. The most recent information I know is that they sold Overture to Yahoo for about 1.6 billion dollars. So, what this means to their balance sheet, only an analyst can tell. If you meant New.net's financial situation, no one can tell anything about that, since they're a private company. Idealab being in financial trouble doesn't mean that New.net is in financial trouble too. In fact, they are profitable according to their press release.
What really sad is, New.net is not being perceived as an innovator just because domain speculators couldn't make quick buck. Most of the people who hate New.net are the greedy speculators spent too much money and couldn't afford the long run.
If I were you, I wouldn't be so sure that they can't make any money :)
Best Regards, Cheers to the "real" risk taking innovators
