While this letter by ICANN is a step in the right direction (it should have been sent on Day 1, or better yet, pre-emptively, as many of us had warned BEFORE SiteFinder went live), it does not go far enough. As per point (d) of the Stop Verisign DNS Abuse [whois.sc] petition, ICANN should insist that all audited GROSS revenues of SiteFinder (this would include Overture's share, Paxfire's share, VeriSign's share and anyone else participating in the revenue of the system) be returned to ICANN, via a payment to the GNSO in the name of the Non-Commercial Constituency. VeriSign and its partners should not be allowed to profit from their reckless behaviour.

This is secondary, and very minor as it was only "live" for about three weeks. I would estimate the SiteFinder revenues to be only several million dollars. All I'm concerned about is that VeriSign halt SiteFinder permanently. While restitution is nice, it's not necessary. ;)

Bzzzt, wrong, guess again. It could be on the order of $1 million/day, if you include everyone's piece of the action (including Paxfire, Overture, VeriSign, and anyone else). That's $20 million, that can be used to reduce com/net fees by $1/yr, for example.

I am glad to see that ICANN has taken action against Verisign’s blatant disregard and lack of respect for the Internet community in relation to the Sitefinder introduction. It is refreshing to see ICANN move quickly and take a stand that is right, has some backbone, and is against Verisign. It helps belie my worry that ICANN, Verisign and the Department of Commerce are in bed with each other on all of the issues at the expense of everyone else. My only concern is that ICANN will throw Verisign the WLS “bone” in exchange for ceasing Sitefinder. ICANN needs to keep in mind that WLS, just as Sitefinder, places services at the Registry level where Verisign has monopoly control, removing competition at the registrar level and reducing consumer choice to the huge financial benefit of Verisign.
I hope ICANN is successful with this. If not it will become an ineffective and worthless body. Good luck, ICANN.

Hi Steve:
CAS Holdings, Inc. is the parent company of Dotster, Mydomain.com, Namesdirect.com, and NameZero, correct? Also, is their a website for CAS Holdings? I've always found it difficult to find information on this company, press releases, or company contract information.
Thanks, Doug Doug Mehus

Doug, the core of our business is not Internet related, rather it is environmental. Yes, we are the parent of Dotster, et al. There really is not website for CAS-Holdings. Our laboratory website is www.caslab.com. Corporate headquarters are in Kelso, WA. Hope this is helpful.

We've been waiting for just such a happening, haven't we?
My prediction: Verisign will refuse.

I'm going to stick my neck out, and predict that VeriSign will agree to ICANN's ultimatum pending further study and review. However, I fully expect them to wait until the last minute tomorrow to reap the rewards. If they don't comply with ICANN's demand, they are almost certainly guaranteed to lose the redelegation of .net in 2004 and are putting their management of .com in serious jeopardy. VeriSign's registry division is their "bread and butter," so to speak. $6 from every registration is a lot of money. :)

Indeed! Even after having 24 hours to digest this all, I'm still surprised that Verisign gave in. I think it has to be one of two possibilties:
1. They feel that, when they put it back on, this will bolster their case in that they can say, "look, we turned it off while we examined it, and, finding no problems, turned it back on. We played by THEIR rules."
or...
2. There was a deal cut. Probably relating to WLS.
#1 makes logical sense. #2 sounds like a conspiracy theory, were it not for the documented facts that this has happened before. Repeatedly.

I have been having issues with this. I am the lead programmer of a successful game company, "J-J-J-Julius Games". Our site is at jjjjulius.com [jjjjulius.com]. Sometimes a less educated person, though, puts the wrong number of j's in front of our URL.
The thing is, this used to just serve up a "page not found", at which point they would wise up and type in the right URL or use a search engine. With the "Sitefinder" they think we have been acquired, though, and go to some inferior game company [valvesoftware.com].
I am in full support of ICANN to stop these abuses.
Cheers,

VeriSign and ICANN have had a symbiotic mutual support system since the beginning, to the detriment of most other life form. With ICANN's new three year extension the shark is no longer in need of a sucker fish riding on it. ICANN with NO brakes on may not turn out to be a Very Good Thing. -g
