Under IDN there are now a lot more single letters available, they're just not in the our familiar ASCII alphabet.

I can at least answer the question of why x.com [x.com] goes to PayPal. Once upon a time, during the wave of dot-com insanity, there was an online bank named X.com. They apparently purchased that domain from whomever managed to register it back in the ancient days before single-letter names were reserved. Somewhere along the line, they acquired PayPal, but the two financial entities were run as separate sites for a while (though both got a reputation for arbitrary and capricious action such as suspending people's accounts at the drop of a hat and making them jump through lots of bureaucratic hoops to try to get their money back). Ultimately, the X.com bank failed, and the company discontinued it and focused solely on PayPal. (Maybe the management disliked the fact that, being an actual bank, X.com was subject to the various laws and regulations surrounding the banking industry, that an Internet payment service like PayPal was exempt from on the grounds of not actually being a bank, though it often acts like one.) Later on, they were acquired by Ebay. From that time on, the X.com domain redirected to PayPal, and hasn't been an address they've actually been promoting; it seems like a waste of such a rare single-letter domain.
