Verisign's use is not innocent - they are making money off of a resource that they are not paying for.
And this is the source of the outcry. It has nothing to do with technical compliance with the RFC's. It has nothing really to do with users. It's all about VeriSign making money when others are struggling. It's not a BFD when .museum or the 11 ccTLD's do it.... but they aren't rich either.
So what if they are making money?
