Yes, this was probably one of the longest ICANNWatch articles but it was a good one. It was eye opening to know the U.S. government, which claims to be "open and transparent," shuts down its public whois service in the interests of "national security." Mr. Byfield is correct, if there is ever a time for a public whois database, it is with government domain names -- be they .GOV or gov.ccTLD. :)

When did the government ever claim to be open and transparent? Seriously.
It seems that the author of the article has too much time on his hands and both of you are probably conspiracy theorists who have a gratuitous distrust of anything governmental.
Such sorts are usually the very same people who cry for bigger government -- one that will logically invade more and more of people's lives and control every aspect of their existence.
Remember that a government that presumes to GRANT rights to the people (rather than one that sees itself as a protector of *GOD*-given rights) can easily revoke those rights.
But I digress. Or do I?
