I'd like to introduce the author of this piece to some of the "domain names" used by the 50-odd spammers I heard from just today:
xxx@123.com (I got 6 or 7 messages from this one)
nike2304@yahoo.co.kr
1mrt@8qlys.com
OK, look up the first domain name and it's an ISP in Chile. Look up the second....well you can't because it is in South Korea. Look up the third and you learn that it is "available for registration."
Accurate WHOIS data does nothing to stop spam.

Anonymous Coward: I have tried reporting domain names which a spammer "spamvertises" and contain invalid WHOIS information; however, most Registrars, with the exception of Go Daddy Software, do not care. Specifically, Register.com did nothing when I reported "pillmedics.net" and "pornhere.net" for invalid WHOIS contact information. So, I contacted Dan Halloran, who by the way is one ICANN's better employees, and he said he'd look into it. I don't think he ever did. What do you suggest there?Doug Mehus

If these websites are accused of fraud or some other illegal activity (such as cluttering my mailbox, which may not actually be illegal) why can't their records be subpeona'd from the registrar? Why are we trying to adapt WHOIS to a purpose it was not intended for, creating huge externalities for everyone else who registers a domain name?
