    regular mail, not e-mail

    I do not recall this part as quite correct. I believe ICANN mailed (not e-mailed) out these identification numbers. I did not get mine. When I inquired where it was, ICANN responded "it had been returned to sender". I replied that this was "very odd" since I used my office mailing address and I get hundreds of all sorts of mail there every week. I did not save these e-mails. But, I believe the rules were that the identification number had to be snail mailed, not e-mailed, by ICANN. Anyone else recall this rule?

    I've got the letter they sent me via postal mail right here. (Hey, it says right at the top: "PLEASE SAVE THIS LETTER", so I did.) Its first paragraph reads:

    This letter provides the information necessary to complete the four step process that activates your ICANN At Large membership. The first step was completing the application form on te At Large website. The second step was the transmission via email to you of your electronic password. This letter is the third step--the delivery to you via postal mail of your electronic PIN, which is shown below. [...] You must now return to the At Large website --- https://members.icann.org/activate.html [icann.org] to complete the fourth step.

    So in fact there were things sent to you via both regular and electronic mail. (I seem to recall that you also needed a "member number", which came in the electronic mail, in order to complete the process.)

    I received both email and snail mail, 2 of each.

    I tried to include the text of the emails in this post, but the "lameness filter" would not allow it. :(

    The first was to let me know that I had completed the first step and included my member number and password for the website. The second was a reminder.

    I recall very well that it was only after several days of trying to access the website that I was finally able to actually complete the registration. I also heard from many people who never received their snail mail in order to complete the four steps and many more who could not access the website even after they did receive their PIN's.

    'only' 75,000? ICANN's very own mission creep spent the better part of the next 18 months whining about how unbearable it was to have to deal with such a torrential response, when they were expecting (and were prepared for) more like 5,000-10,000.
