Netscape actually doesn't use the file extension to decide what application to use; it uses the server-supplied MIME type, as the standards say it's supposed to. Microsoft violates those standards.
When I tried it now, it was being sent as "audio/mid" (apparently based on my mistaken advice earlier to use the MIDI MIME type; that's wrong, it should be using "audio/mpeg"... and even if it was MIDI, the proper type would be "audio/midi" or "audio/x-midi"; "audio/mid" is an incorrect version even though Microsoft seems to recommend it, another lapse of standards noncompliance). This caused Winamp to be launched by my browser, but it failed because it was mistakenly informed about what media type it was.
