Mike Sorros writes "ICANN recently decided to allow two applicants, the UPU (United Postal Union, an U.N. organization) which applied for ".post" and Tralliance Corporation which applied for ".travel", to enter into the Commercial & Technical Negotiations phase.

While all other applications are not officially rejected, I ask myself, if they will be pending forever... Don't forget, the ones from 2000 are also still pending. Also, I really can't believe that the ".mobi" folks did a bad job at all compared with the UPU and Tralliance Corporation. All participating companies in the ".mobi" initiative have a strong reputation and are industry leaders.

Did ICANN "unofficially reject" the application because of the fear of an industry monopoly which makes ICANN no longer necessary in the long run, once millions or even billions of mobile domain names are registered?

What will be the industry's next move? Will support for ICANN in the mobile industry decrease?"

[Editor's note: It is too early to count .mobi out, but it was no accident that the technical priesthood singled out .mobi for its attacks (Tim Berners-Lee's silly arguments being a prime example). The problem with .mobi was that unlike virtually every other sTLD proposed, it might actually amount to something. Another commercially successful registry on the order of VeriSign does indeed pose a major challenge to ICANN's little stagnant pond. The only other sTLD that might have made a significant difference was .xxx, and of course that is the one ICANN doesn't mind letting out the word that it is dead. --MM]

Does anyone have any info on where the .xxx application is?

That was one of the few applications that had a purpose if handled correctly but it seems ICANN has it pending, again.

Does this mean "no chance in hell" or "maybe"?
