 Dot FR is opening up this week

As of this week, anyone who can be indentified in the french chamber of commerce and other professionnal databases is able to register whatever name he likes. This means french firms and organisations, of course, but also any individual (not necessarily french) who holds a valid trademark in France. Private individuals, resident in France, will have to wait until 2005."

"The phased landrush period uses a novel system to limit the overload. On the first day, May 11th, only names beginning with a and b could be registered. The second day included a-f, the third a-n and the last day (Friday, May 14, 2004), a-z.
According to the English version of the French domain news site Domainesinfo.fr (http://domaines.info/english_tous_articles.php), 6000 valid registration requests were received the first day and more than 20 000 on the second day. To put this in perspective, there were only about 180 000 .FR names in total before the landrush began."
