Civil society groups protest U.S. Whois law

IDP Highlights writes "Five civil society groups have issued a joint letter expressing concern over a proposal (being considered by a committee of the United States House of Representatives) that would essentially increase penalties for knowingly providing incorrect information when registering a domain name, if that person is found to have violated a copyright or trademark. The authors of the letter fear that the proposal "will penalize and potentially jail Americans who seek only to protect their privacy and right to anonymous free speech online." The text of the bill has been posted online, as well as the letter in PDF format."
