.INFO and .BIZ Zone Files Shrinking?
posted by michael on Tuesday November 18 2003, @10:49AM
CBJ writes "I haven't seen any comments on the apparent shrinkage of the .info and .biz zone files. Both started to decrease around the 2 year anniversary of their first filings. I assume this was caused by the non renewal of the initial 2 year registrations. Based on my zone file retrievals, this is what I have encountered:
The .info count peaked at about 1,184,000 on 13 September 2003. On 15 November the count was about 1,104,500. (http://www.afilias.info/gateway/index_html)
The .biz count peaked at about 1,055,00 on 6 November 2003. On 15 November the count was about 1,008,000. (http://www.neulevel.biz."

"Can anyone confirm the drop in registrations? I have not seen anything mentioned on the Afilias or NeuLevel sites.
Interesting to see this happen just as ICANN gets in gear for new sTLD's and eventually new gTLD's."

Those numbers are consistent with those provided at DailyChanges.com [dailychanges.com], where .info/biz deletions exceed new registrations these days.

I have not observed people actually using either .biz or .info.
I can't say that I have ever received more than one or two legitimate, non spam e-mails from people in .info or .biz. (There is, however, a lot of spams from those TLDs.)
And my web logs show essentially zero activity from .biz or .info among several hundred thousand hits with the notable exception of does-not-exist.info.
