dmehus writes "LA Names Corporation, Ltd. recently announced that it has launched registration of .LA domain names. It has the most confusing business partnerships I have ever seen."

"Let's see if I can make sense of it: LA Names enters into a long-term contractual relationship with LANIC, the Laos governmental body that oversees the .LA ccTLD, to act as the registry administrator for .LA. It promotes .LA as web address registration for Los Angeles residents and businesses, through its sole registrar partner, DreamHost. It claims DreamHost is an ICANN-accredited registrar, and says LA Names represenatives will be on hand at ICANN's Montréal quarterly meeting to pursue the possibility of adding additional registrars.
Dublin, Ireland-based Afilias Ltd. has entered into an agreement to provide back-end registry services to LA Names in a manner consistent with its agreements to manage the technical operation of .org, .vc, and other ccTLDs. Lastly, the pricing structure is expensive, $50 per year and all that gets you is a mere "coming soon" webpage.
You may remember from previous ICANNWatch coverage in late 2002 when ICANN's IANA function authorized redelegation of the .LA ccTLD back to LANIC, from Sterling. Running a search for .LA should yield several results about prior coverage."
[Editor's note: Here's one at least: .la goes home -mf]

From the press release: Independent forecasts suggest up to 1 million .la names will be registered over the coming years... Uh huh, sure. This is right up there with .tv will be bigger than com on the hype meter. And while Dreamhost claims [dreamhost.com] to be an ICANN accredited registrar and links to ICANN's accredited list [icann.org], the list doesn't actually contain the name Dreamhost. It appears they're accredited (if at all) under the name(s) Domainitron/New Dream Network. -g

Domaintron, New Dream Network, and Dreamhost are all names used by the same company (a bit confusingly), so their statements are truthful.
My own sites are hosted with Dreamhost.
