Country-Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) Opposition to .us Giveaway Mounts
posted by Michael on Sunday July 22, @07:23AM

Many developments on the .us issue. Three Senators, including the chair of the Commerce Committee, wrote to the Dept. of Commerce asking for a delay to the .us RFQ; Congressman Markey also wrote to complain about the process and especially the give-away aspects of the current plan. Barbara Simons, and Eugene H. Spafford, who happen to be the Co-Chairs U.S. ACM Public Policy Committee, wrote a letter expressing opposition. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times ran an editorial attacking the Commerce plan to give away .us.

Although so far it's mostly Democrats who are complaining, the fact that they now control the Senate makes their opposition more significant.

So with all this opposition, who's supporting this idea? One fairly credible rumor says that it's ... VeriSign, perhaps because they think they have an inside track to win the contract. Another often reliable source says that some of ICANN's earliest supporters are pushing for it because the plan would give ICANN unprecedented power over a ccTLD. But until someone is willing to come forward and speak on the record, these must be regarded as just rumors. Commentary from someone who has real facts would be most welcome.
