ICANN's new US$2 Domain Name Tax
posted by michael on Thursday March 24 2005, @02:40PM
Mike Sorros writes "Today ICANN published two proposed registry agreement, one for ".jobs" and one for ".travel".
See what they did:"(c) Registry-Level Transaction Fee. Commencing as of the Effective Date, Registry Operator shall pay ICANN a Registry-Level Transaction Fee in an amount equal to US$2.00 for each annual increment of an initial or renewal domain name registration or for transferring a domain name registration from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another during the calendar quarter to which the Registry-Level Transaction Fee pertains. For purposes of this Section 7.2(c), a “domain name registration” shall include a domain name within the registry for the TLD, whether consisting of two or more (e.g., john.smith.name) levels, about which Registry Operator or an affiliate thereof maintains Registry Data." What if they do the same with ".net"?"

OK ICANN... Get the cost of domain control up to the level needed to push the zones and all the dns lookup tables into each and every computer on the network. It's only a matter of time that the real power of the internet, the users of the system, will decide were they place their money. Get ready for subscription operators to supply this market of internet address data and watch ICANN react! Not a thing can be done to stop it.
