Happy Anniversary ICANN!
posted by michael on Sunday March 20 2005, @08:00PM
Mike Sorros writes "Remember last year's March 15th? The deadline for the submission of applications for new "Sponsored Top Level Domains"? Yes, already a year passed and we still have no decision of how many, which strings and when these new sTLDs will be entered into the root.

Some applicants did receive a "go" from ICANN's board to enter into commercial and technical negotiations with ICANN, but this is far from a final approval by the ICANN board...
Congratulation ICANN! You made it, again! No minutes have been published for the last three board meetings in regard to the status of the pending applications, which is far from what someone would call an open and transparent process...
Even worse, it seems as the board is trying to regulate on a TLD-to-TLD basis and is restricting the namespace (see the ".mobi" application)...
Give it a break!
Do you call the ".net" contract a contract someone running a for-profit business in the real world would ever sign? Will the ".mobi" consortium sign such a contract?
Worse, would any "real" business sign up for yet-to-be-determined "consensus" policies, knowing that no "consensus" ever needs to be even vetted, much less reached?
I agree completely with Susan Crawford: "This {contract} isn't negotiable, as a matter of reality." Will the sTLD applicants have any choice other than accept every part in the contract ICANN dictates, even limitations?
Especially for smaller organizations the answer is clearly: No! But what about the ".mobi" initiative? Will they stand-up against ICANN's dictatorship?
What if all the ".mobi" members can't live with ICANN's dictates and decide to turn away?
What if all the ".mobi" members decide to turn away, set-up their own root-servers and serve their millions (or even billions) of customers by their own infrastructure, which would generally be in legacy mode of the DoC root servers with the little tiny addition of ".mobi", ".mobile", simply ".m" or whatever they would prefer?
What could ICANN do against such a large industry consortium such as ".mobi"? What if ICANN looses all support of industry leaders such as Vodafone, Nokia, T-Mobile, Samsung and all the others? Will ICANN survive the next few years, independent of what will be decided in Tunis (WSIS)? My bet is a clear NO!
Watch out ICANN or you soon will be in court again for "restraint of trade"..."
[Editor's note - apologies for not running this on the 15th. Your editors have been distracted. -mf]

Suckers is it exactly. You are one of the few people (other than the people who are actually involved and benefiting - ie. Verisign excecutives and senior officers at ICANN) who are actually aware of what is going on. Most people don't even believe their beloved U.S. government would turn a blind eye if this were true...people here are just too naive and don't understand the scams at the highest levels of business.
Verisign also controls Afilias and pays off the other 18 registrars in the consortium to allow them to mess up .info to keep competition away from .com in the present and future (so new gtld's will Not be added again). And they have succeeded in this. If you don't believe this, then answer why almost half of the best .info names are still locked after almost 4 years? If you owned the .info registry, wouldn't you want to have these names in use so you could promote .info and sell more registrations? It is time for .info to be taken away from Afilias immmediately without urther delay.
