Country-Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) Nominet Chairman Dr Willie Black Resigns
posted by michael on Sunday September 12 2004, @11:48AM

Anonymous writes "As per Demys: Dr Willie Black - the Chairman of Nominet has announced he will resign as chairman of Nominet after nine years with the .uk naming authority."

"Willie Black was the founder of Nominet and its very first employee and oversaw the growth of the not-for-profit company from its birth with only 3 staff to an organisation with personnel of 130 and a £10m turnover. He served first as Managing Director and then more recently as Chairman. He pioneered the development of the not-for-profit ccTLD registry model, which has subsequently been copied by domain name Registries throughout the world.

Black said, "The challenge nine years ago was to set up a stable registry for the .uk domain name space. I feel satisfied that Nominet now has a strong and effective senior management team, financial stability, provides excellent customer service, and has gained substantial respect both from the industry and from government. Now that this has been achieved, I feel that it is the right time for me to move on and apply the knowledge I have gained to new challenges elsewhere."

Nominet's Managing Director, Lesley Cowley said: "Willie's foresight, guidance and leadership have helped to establish Nominet as one of the World's most successful and highly regarded domain registries, and we are profoundly grateful for his substantial contribution."

Willie's sometimes forthright views were a feature of Internet policy and governance and were covered extensively by Demys.net in a series of three interviews in March last year in which he discussed the new top level domain .eu and country code operators' often fraught relationship with governing bodies ICANN and IANA."

Willie's been a very influential character in the UK - and European - Internet industry. I wish him good luck in whatever he chooses to do next. His successor will have a hard act to follow.

    Hi,

I know that the long queue stretches around the block on having the opportunity to state this, but Willie is an amazing visionary in the ccTLD arena.

I have had the pleasure of meeting with Willie Black at a variety of ICANN meetings, both formally and informally.

I have had the opportunity to hear his many presentations, points, counterpoints, and comments in the formations of the various constituencies that exist in the community.

This is a remarkable man, and I hope that his contributions to the Domain Name Infrastructure and policy can somehow continue, and that many of the befenfits that ccTLD administrators now enjoy as a result of Mr. Black holding the line for us with ICANN do not get lost.

Much success to Wille Black in future endeavors.

    -Jothan Frakes
