.org PIR Board Chair Maher Shuffles Responsibilities
posted by Mueller on Wednesday August 25 2004, @12:05PM

dmehus writes "It appears that founding (and now former) Chair of the Board of Directors of .ORG registry operator Public Interest Registry David Maher has resigned his position on the organization's Board -- and taken on new responsibilities as a top-level executive there. His new title is Senior Vice President, Law and Policy. Privacy advocate Marc Rotenberg has been named acting Board Chair.

PIR President and CEO Ed Viltz said, "David's counsel has been invaluable to PIR's success and to me personally. We are fortunate to have David's continued counsel and extensive experience in the domain name space. In addition, we look forward to his assistance expanding PIR's leadership role on policy positions in the public interest."

I certainly don't doubt Mr. Maher's credentials in his new role and he seems to have served PIR well on its Board. (He hasn't had any negative publicity and, in fact, was one of (if not the) first critics from a major domain name registry of SiteFinder when VeriSign launched it last fall.) Plus, he's worked closely with the organization's management team in bringing Redemption Grace Period to .ORG. As well, he is an accomplished attorney, from a quick scan of his bio. I just found it a bit odd that he moved from Board Chair to a senior executive position. Usually, it's the other way around when hard-working executives are given a cooshy seat on the company Board when they decide to retire."
