Country-Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) IEDR Loses Control of .ie
posted by michael on Tuesday April 13 2004, @10:25AM

Rossa writes "The Department of Communications, Marine & Natural Resources is to transfer the regulation and control of the Irish ccTLD (.ie) to the Commisison for Communications Regulation ("ComReg"). Minister Dermot Ahern said that the transfer to ComReg would "immeasurably strengthen" the registry's operations."

The necessary legislation is already being drafted, and is expected to go before the Cabinet shortly. The new law will also provide for fines of up to €2,000 daily for non-compliance with regulations laid down with the operation of the registry.

    According to a press release:
The new Bill also provides for the Minister to issue policy directions in relation to the management of the domain name. Other aspects of the Bill allows for administrative issues in relation to the management of the domain name including authorising Com Reg to impose a levy on the registration authority to fund their expenses in relation to the management of the registration authority.
The move comes after months of controversy and speculation in relation to the Irish ccTLD. According to enn.ie "Last November, it emerged that the government was seeking to give ComReg the power to regulate the registry under the Miscellaneous Provisions Bill. But these new measures go a step further by completely taking control of the dot-ie registration out of IEDR Ltd's hands."

A statement is expected from the IE Domain Registry in the afternoon of Tuesday 13 April."

Statement of the IEDR [www.iedr.ie]: "The IE Domain Registry Ltd.(IEDR), the company responsible for managing the registration of .ie domain names, has been discussing regulatory and other issues relating to .ie domain names with the Department and will be continuing with these in light of the Ministerial announcement. We look forward to continuing consultations with the Department on draft legislation when it is published."
