Registrars NZ Commerce Watchdog stops $500K+ from going to do
posted by michael on Tuesday April 13 2004, @05:35AM

Steven Heath writes "Reporting in papers in both New Zealand and Australia is that the New Zealand Commerce Commission has stopped payments of over $580,000 NZ ($375,000 US) going to the domain name slammer Domain Names of NZ (related to Domain Names of Australia).

"The commission executed search warrants on the New Zealand post office where we scooped up hundreds of letters with cheques in them on their way to Australia," she [Commissioner Deborah Battell] said. "We then went to the New Zealand banks and intercepted credit card payments as well as more cheques in the process of being cleared. These were being directed to a bank account in Switzerland."

Re:7 new ICANN offices...with no people in them ?

An interesting aspect of US tax law is that employee travel from home to office is not deductable while travel from office to office is.

This fact can, and has, driven the creation of remote offices, or offices placed near the homes of certain executives so that otherwise non-deductable travel expenses can become deductable expenses with the net effect of increasing the employee's after-tax income.

Executives who are contractors and who operate through intermediary corporations don't need to do this.

Anyone that follows the ccTLD relationship with ICANN would recall that .nz is hardly an ICANN puppet. For instance the letter InternetNZ (.nz ccTLD manager) sent to ICANN about paying the ICANN 'invoices' is proof in point.

ICANN can create offices anywhere they wish, but most ccTLD's just want a clear process on IANA issues. The entire (mis)management of gTLD's has nothing to do with ccTLD's.
