.pro registry sold
posted by michael on Thursday February 12 2004, @03:10PM
cambler writes "From Register.com's 8-K statement:
-- During the fourth quarter of 2003, Register.com entered into an agreement (with Hostway Corporation, a global leader in Web hosting and managed Internet services) to sell the core assets of its subsidiary, RegistryPro. Subject to approval by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Hostway will become the registry operator for the .pro top-level domain for professionals. Financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed."
fnord writes "The .pro gTLD, which has yet to set sail, AKA another one of the seven boat anchor gTLDs ICANN put to sea from Marina del Rey away back in November of 2000, has been sold by register.com to hosting company Hostway. So it says here, and on Yahoo news here, so it must be true. This is pending ICANN approval of course, which Hostway expects will be coming in short order (ICANN moving quickly, that'll be a sight to see). Hostway registers domain names but they're not even ICANN accredited, they're a reseller for ICANN accredited registrar AAAQ (though from their respective WHOIS records the two entities do appear close). Can someone remind me why hundreds of thousands of dollars was spent vetting and ruthlessly paring down the new gTLD applicants to these seven stranded castaways? ICANN should be charged with engaging in reverse alchemy the way they repeatedly turn gold into dross. -g"

Why is ICANN approval required? If Register.com was just to sell its shares in RegistryPro to Hostway and RegistryPro continued as the operator, I don't see why ICANN is even needed. However, if RegistryPro will be dissolved and Hostway will be assuming the registry operation duties, then yes of course I see why ICANN approval is needed.
Cheers, Doug
P.S. Nonetheless, this is hilarious to see. Register.com will eventually have to disclose the price of the sale in a future SEC filing, probably at its year-end filings.Doug Mehus

Hostway owns DomainPeople, an ICANN accredited registrar. It acquired DomainPeople through its acquisition this summer of Vancouver, B.C.-based NetNation Communications. It operates DomainPeople as either a wholly owned subsidiary or separate brand. So, it's odd they're not using DomainPeople to their advantage. I wonder why they're also a reseller.
Oh well, another instance like this is how RegisterFly is an eNom reseller but its parent company Unified Names, Inc. operates Dodora Communications, which is an ICANN accredited registrar. :)
