Laugh (or Cry) Sauce for the Goose, but not the Gander
posted by michael on Friday January 09 2004, @07:17AM

Recall the Peta.org case in which PETA wrenched back PETA.org from People Eating Tasty Animals (while making horrible law in the process)? Well, PETA has done some domain wrangling of its own, and registered beef.com.

OK, the two situations are not identical, since "beef" is generic for the formerly live bovine protein, and PETA is a trademarkable term, albeit one that is open to parody. But it's still funny.
    Updated.

Actually, though, it may be part of a clever campaign to push up the value of the domain. The Toronto Star reports:
PETA posted its anti-meat and mad cow messages on Beef.com after Michael Fischer of Troy, Mich., allowed the group to use his domain name. Friedrich said Fischer, who was out of the country, was seeking $2.5 million for the address, but offered it to PETA for free for a month because he's sympathetic to the group's cause.
Think this might make the beef folks willing to up their bids?
