This is something that ICANN could, and ought to have done, a long ago. But ICANN made a conscious choice to remain obsessed with trademarks. For instance, on my very first day on the Board, I circulated a plan to establish a DNS monitoring and reporting system. The board was not interested. And ICANN's vaunted security committee, launched right after Sept 11 did nothing until recently when it was taken out of deep freeze to give an opinion on Sitefinder.
So, is there really any job left for ICANN to do? Oh yeah, I forgot, new TLDs. But ICANN seems to have once again chosen inaction; we will not see new TLDs for at least another year.

Particularily as I predicted a root server attack much as it did happen a year beforehand. It wasn't successful but the next one could be. I also described how to do it in general terms over a series of posts here (I deliberately split it up so as not to give a how-to to any script kiddies, and the older archives are sufficiently askew as to make searching now hit and miss). This is in the best spirit of the net and in stark contrast to how VeriSign would have us handle [icannwatch.org] such threats. Funny how that commercialization that VeriSign CEO Stratton Sclavos speaks [com.com] of so highly: It should scare people that nine of the 13 went down. It's time for the Internet infrastructure to go commercial.... doesn't seem to be working [yahoo.com] too well for themselves, let alone anyone else. A 15 year old script kiddie with the moniker Mafia Boy knocked [cnn.com] out commercial sites like Amazon and Yahoo. The commercialization of the net is not some Version 2.0 that improves things as Sclavos would have us believe. If anything the commercialization has led to stagnation. When's the last time you saw a killer app? Their appearance used to be common, and most of them were not created for commercial reasons. -g
