CDT Calls for "Privacy Balance" regarding
posted by michael on Friday September 12 2003, @08:01PM
dmehus writes "The Center for Democracy and Technology, a well-known non-profit Washington, D.C. policy think tank, has sent an open letter to House Reps. Lamar Smith (Texas) and Howard Berman (California) regarding the privacy and personal security implications that the domain name Whois database has had on individual users. To summarize, it recommends that the best way to achieve accuracy in the Whois database will be to guarantee registrants privacy and security for their information. The solutions it proposes include include creating a "tiered access" system for viewing Whois data, providing notice to users when their data is viewed, and/or creating "audit trails" that could expose abuse or misuse of the database. A full text copy of the letter is available here."

"It is written and signed by Alan Davidson, who oversees and writes about domain name system policy for the CDT. As a witness, he also attended another, similar congressional oversight hearing into ICANN. Full text of his testimony from that separate hearing is available here."
