.eu and Europe too EURid To Run .eu -- Unofficial
posted by michael on Sunday March 23 2003, @08:01PM

Europemedia reports that there is still no official confirmation of the news that the European Commission looks set to award the new '.eu' top-level internet domain to EURid, a consortium of the Swedish [corrected], Italian and Belgian ccTLD administrators. The news first appeared in Bret Fausett's ICANN Blog, complete with a link to the EU Commission's "draft decision". Apparently, however, EURid itself has yet to hear anything official, and warns that even if it is the winner it will still take another six months before launch.

One big question: Will the new Australianized ICANN try to make .eu sign the same one-sided contract ICANN crammed down on .au?

According to an article in The Register, under EURid's plan for .eu, "There will be a sunrise period for trademark owners etc to grab domains and so hopefully avert cybersquatting problems. The domains will be sold for 10 Euros a head, with the intention that this will fall to 5 Euros after a year." In addition, "EURid will have a Board and a Policy Council made up of a wide range of interested parties from across Europe - a model run successfully by Nominet in the UK."
