    Minor Memos Rat's-eye-view of ICANN
posted by tbyfield on Tuesday November 26 2002, @10:21AM

Government Computer News, a publication one might expect to err on the side of editorial caution, has published (if only by means of syndication) a fairly scathing editorial about ICANN: "Internet security needs a kick in the ICANN." In discussing the recent attack on the root and name servers, the author, "Packet Rat," writes:
The DNS attack was just another kick at ICANN's can. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and its contractor, VeriSign Inc., responded to the attack with lame comments.

"Life goes on," said Louis Touton, ICANN's vice president.

"In other words, 'Stuff happens,'" sighed the Rat. "I guess we can all say that when the Commerce Department revokes your charter."

    R. Fink. You'd have to be an oldster to get that reference, one of two famous Big Daddy's, there were so many around back then. Yer occasionally resident net prophet sed a coupla months ago that someone would take down the net with a DoS attack real soon now and later flagged how to do it, in a very subtle way, don't you understand? I'm a critic of ICANN but I'm not on the dark side either, and I won't even provide a link to where I sed it on ICANNWatch earlier, at least not until it happens. Thankfully the script kiddies apparently can't understand simple English, they just point and click so they must have missed it, but yeah, if the question is if someone used brute force or megabux for success, then yeah the root that ICANN is sworn to protect and serve would be offline long enough to make MafiaBoy blush.

And BTW, I'm Canadian and in the spirit of the oncoming XMas season I'd like to say that I don't think George Bush is a moron, at least compared to those weenies like Louis. I wuz sorta right about the last prediction, so I'll make another one. Within two months someone will succeed in knocking the majority of the net offline for awhile. ICANN's SSAC, which is actually partially made up of some pretty clued folks, will be shown to be as ineffectual through its relationship to ICANN as anything else which comes within its orbit, and perhaps that non-moronic ruler of the free world will look up a DoC number in his Rolodex and ask them WTF is up. And perhaps not. And so it goes. This is all really too funny. -g
