Alternate Roots Early Autumn? Pre-ICANN .BIZ dumped by one alt root
posted by michael on Sunday September 15 2002, @02:31PM

isquat writes "It seems that the non-ICANN .BIZ TLD, run by Leah Gallagos of ARNI, is losing support in alt root circles. Today emails were sent out by the Pacific Root, which was the registry for this version of .BIZ, and by ADNS and Leah Gallagos, the manager of the non-ICANN .BIZ ."

The .BIZ/ADNS email was sent out to .BIZ registrants under the title "We fought the good fight but it is over":

There is a difference between the two messages in the justification for the change.

Pacific Root seems to drop .BIZ for the ICANN replacement for financial reasons, and trades in its own version of .INFO (never supported by anyone but them) for the ICANN one at the same time and the same reason (rather turgidly delegating it to ICANN [not Afilias!] on a three months trial basis).

For .BIZ/ADNS it is more a matter of a moratorium: users are advised to change into another TLD, because the true .BIZ cannot win, even though it is right.

The oldest and largest alternative root, the Open Root Server Consortium (ORSC, in 1998 one of the contenders for the bid to the task ICANN won), is not expected to follow in the steps of Pacroot. The ORSC root server operations are not dependent on one company, but are fulfilled by a number of volunteers, similar to the ICANN setup.

[Editor's note: See our earlier coverage of the disputed size and relevance of the alternate .biz TLD.]

I just mentioned the dueling .biz's here yesterday and my comments somewhat fit. ARNI's .biz was crushed by a bigger gorilla but that was more dead weight than substance. I doubt there are 1,000 unique ICANN .biz websites out there, and I suspect other functions like email are also little used. If the intent is to 'empty out' ARNI's .biz, presumably the ORSC will also switch over. -g

Somehow I think that ICANN realized that IOD had the means and the will to take action if they gave .WEB to anyone else.
