Registrars New perspectives on registrar market share: Forbes Int'l & Yahoo Directory
posted by tbyfield on Tuesday May 28 2002, @05:44PM

BenEdelman writes "Building on comments from ICANNwatch and elsewhere, I've updated my earlier work on registrar market share. My new report on registrar market share extends analysis first to large firms outside the US (namely the Forbes International 500), and second to "well-known" domains (those listed in Yahoo). In this way, I've attempted to get a sense of where actual active domains are registered -- and which registrars have the biggest share of this market, as distinguished from domains registered for, for example, warehousing, resale, or other future use."

As usual, a full listing of results, summary statistics, and charts are available. The highlights: First, that big non-US companies seem to prefer registrars located outside the US. Second, that Verisign has a somewhat higher market share among Yahoo registrations -- even among new additions to Yahoo -- than a simple quotient of registrations would suggest.

My revised report is available at:

Thanks for the comment! Seriously! I recognize that I'm currently posting more new threads to ICANNwatch than most other readers. And there's a sense in which I definitely risk breaking the social convention here.

My web logs reflect that a substantial number of people are continuing to read my reports -- many of them arriving at my site through ICANNwatch. Based on this data, my sense has been that I should continue to publicize my work here. But at the same time I have no doubt that there are some ICANNwatch readers who aren't much interested in the things I'm interested in, or in the methods I use to do research.

I'm still struggling with the question of what to do here. At some point the ICANNwatch editors may cut me off -- tell me not to come back, or to come back less frequently! Or, at some point web logs may reflect that no one much cares about the things I post here. But for now my sense is that I'm doing OK. Still, if others want to chime in -- agree with Anonymous's comments -- I'd certainly be interested to hear from more people.

He probably is if you don't appreciate very good academic research and unbiased observations!
